The Story
As solar capacity reaches record highs, the power grid faces a paradoxical crisis: uncontrollability. Unlike fossil fuels, solar generation is variable, leading grid operators to "curtail" or shut down solar assets when they cause disturbances. In 2022 alone, California lost $220 million to solar curtailment.
Latimer Controls, led by CEO Simon Julian, emerged to solve this by transforming solar into a reliable, dispatchable resource. Based on foundational research from the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), Latimer developed a patented software solution that uses deep learning to predict solar potential and assign inverter set points in real-time.
This allows solar plants to provide essential grid services, like frequency response and voltage support, even under dynamic cloud cover. To communicate this complex technical breakthrough to investors and grant bodies, Latimer needed a narrative that balanced high-level economic impact with rigorous hardware-in-the-loop test results.
We produced a comprehensive video showcase that translated their "theoretical algorithm" into a "production-ready" software vision, highlighting their ability to outperform fossil fuels with higher accuracy and lower costs.

The Result
The video served as a cornerstone for Latimer Controls’ successful funding and market expansion efforts. Following its deployment, the team secured over $500,000 in grant funding, including awards from Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and the American-Made Solar Prize.
Beyond capital, the video helped facilitate their first paid pilot contract with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative and supported a massive $3.5 million Optima grant proposal. By effectively visualizing their backend autonomous control software, Latimer moved from a graduate research concept to a commercially viable technology poised to save utilities hundreds of millions in annual fuel costs.
